TYP means typical — the dimension, detail or note it tags applies to every similar condition, not just the one the leader line happens to point at.
TYP is one of the hardest-working abbreviations on a drawing set, and one of the most argued about. It is not hard to understand. The trouble is always in the extent.
What TYP means
TYP means typical. It converts a single annotated instance into an instruction that covers every comparable condition. Instead of dimensioning forty identical stud spacings or noting the same slab edge in eleven places, you annotate one and write TYP.
Read it as: this is the same everywhere the same condition occurs, unless the drawings say otherwise somewhere else. The last clause matters. A specific detail or a specific dimension always beats a TYP, which is why sheets carry U.N.O. notes.
What TYP does not tell you is how many, or how far. That is the whole problem with it, and the source of most of the disputes it causes. A bare TYP on a bracket detail leaves the reader to decide whether it means the four brackets on this elevation, the brackets on this level, or every bracket on the job.
How it appears on a drawing
On a dimension, sitting after the figure:
100 TYP
On a note, usually bracketed, and much better when the extent is stated:
M16 BOLTS @ 150 CRS (TYP 4 PLACES EACH SIDE)
Calling up a detail across a set:
DETAIL 5/S12 TYP AT ALL COLUMN BASES U.N.O.
Or as a general note governing the sheet:
ALL DIMENSIONS TYP U.N.O. - REFER SPECIFIC DETAILS WHERE SHOWN
Mechanical and product drafting increasingly replaces TYP with a multiplier, which removes the ambiguity entirely because the count is explicit:

If you are the one drafting, that habit is worth stealing. TYP 6 PLACES, TYP EACH END, TYP ALL LEVELS and TYP THIS ELEVATION ONLY cost you three words and save an RFI.
Terms it gets confused with
- SIM – similar. This is the important one. TYP means identical, repeated as drawn. SIM means comparable but requiring interpretation: mirrored, handed, a different length, a different substrate. If the condition is not actually identical, do not write TYP.
- OPP or OPP HAND – mirrored. Often paired as
SIM OPP HAND. - U.N.O. / U.O.N. – unless noted otherwise, the escape clause that makes a TYP workable.
- EQ – equal spacing, where the drawing sets out the divisions but not the figure.
- A typical detail, as a noun – a standard office detail on a general sheet, called up repeatedly. Related idea, different thing from the TYP tag.
Regional and discipline differences
TYP reads the same in Australia, the UK and the US. This is not a term where the geography changes the meaning.
The split is by discipline. In architectural, structural and civil work TYP is completely standard and nobody blinks at it. In mechanical and product drafting working to ASME Y14.5, the direction of travel is away from TYP toward the nX multiplier, because TYP’s extent is not defined. Older editions of the standard expressed a preference for the multiplier rather than banning TYP, and plenty of individual company drafting manuals go further and prohibit it outright. If you are detailing to a client’s drafting standard, check which camp they are in.
TYP is used freely on Australian sets and I have not seen anything in AU practice that rules it out. But the general principle behind drawing abbreviations – use them only where the meaning is unquestionably clear to the reader – is exactly the argument against a bare TYP with no stated extent.
Where to check on your own drawing set
- The general notes sheet, for a blanket
TYP U.N.O.statement that changes how the whole set reads. - The abbreviations legend on the cover or general sheet.
- The extent wording immediately around the TYP itself, and any hatch, bracket or dashed extent line indicating how far it reaches.
- Whether a specific detail elsewhere in the set overrides it for your location.

Other meanings of TYP
In electronics, TYP is a column heading in component datasheets meaning “typical value”, sitting between MIN and MAX. That is a nominal or average measured value under stated conditions, not an instruction that something repeats, so do not carry the drafting meaning across. TYP is also the ordinary German word for “type”, which shows up in imported equipment nameplates and schedules.
