Twelve traditional brick bonds, each one a separate download so you can take only the bond you need. Every pattern below is shown as it will hatch, and the bonds are the real thing – English, Flemish, common, garden wall and their cross and diaper variants, as they have been laid for centuries. These are the patterns that make a brick elevation read as brickwork rather than as a grid of rectangles.

Stretcher courses with a full header course every sixth course to tie the wall together. A practical compromise between the speed of running bond and the strength of English bond.

The same sixth-course header arrangement drawn at a much finer module, for elevations at small scale where the standard pattern would fill in solid.

English bond with each stretcher course shifted half a brick, so the headers step diagonally across the wall and form a subtle cross figure.

Flemish bond with contrasting headers arranged into a bold diamond diaper across the wall face. The most decorative bond here – use it where the brickwork is meant to be noticed.

Two stretchers between each header rather than one, stretching the Flemish rhythm out horizontally. Common in garden and boundary walls.

Alternating courses of headers and stretchers. One of the strongest traditional bonds and common in older solid walls, engineering brickwork and retaining structures.

Headers and stretchers alternating within every course, so each header sits centred over the stretcher below. The classic decorative face bond of Georgian and Victorian work.

Three stretchers to every header – the economical bond traditionally used for garden and boundary walls, where a fair face was wanted on both sides without the cost of full Flemish work.

The everyday bond: all stretchers, each course lapped half a brick over the one below. This is what most modern cavity walls and brick veneer look like, and it is the bond to reach for unless the drawing says otherwise.

No lap at all: every perpend lines up in a continuous vertical joint. Structurally weak, so it appears as a modern facing pattern over a backing wall rather than as load-bearing brickwork.

Third running bond

Running bond lapped one third of a brick instead of one half, giving a stepped diagonal emphasis to the courses. A quiet alternative when a half-lap looks too regular.

Installing these patterns

Unzip the download and put the .PAT file somewhere AutoCAD searches — the support file search path under OPTIONS > Files is the simplest place.
Run HATCH, set the pattern type to Custom and pick the pattern by name.
Adjust the hatch scale to suit your drawing scale. If the hatch fills solid the scale is too small; if nothing appears it is too large.
