CASEMENT LISP: Draw a Casement Window in AutoCAD

September 18, 2020

Last updated July 28, 2026

CASEMENT draws a casement window in plan — the frame, the sash and the hinge side — from a width, a height and which way it opens. It is described in its own header as a sample program, and that is the right way to think about it: a working demonstration of parametric window drawing rather than a finished office tool.

It draws from the last point, not from a pick

This is the thing that will confuse you, so it comes first. The routine never asks where to put the window. It takes its starting corner from AutoCAD’s last point — the position of the most recent point you entered, whatever command that was.

So the window appears wherever you last clicked or typed a coordinate, which may be nowhere near where you wanted it. The way to control it is to set the last point deliberately first: run the ID command and pick the corner you want, then run CASEMENT.

Once you know that it is easy enough to live with, and on a wall you are already drawing the last point is often exactly right. But nothing on screen tells you this is how it works.

What it asks for

Three things, and it validates all of them properly — the width and height prompts refuse a null, zero or negative answer, and the hinge prompt will not let you skip it.

  • Width and Height — the opening size. You can type these or show them on screen.
  • Left or Right hinge — which side the casement swings from. Type L or R.

The frame and sash thicknesses are not asked for. They are fixed in the code as two offset values, which is what makes this a sample rather than a general tool — the proportions suit whatever the author was drawing. Both are single numbers near the top of the file and easy to change if you want it to match your own detailing.

It saves your command echo, pick box, current linetype and current colour before it starts, which is more care than most routines here take over the drawing environment.

Command reference

The file defines a single command, CASEMENT. Note that the comment at the top of the file calls it CASELEFT.LSP, which was presumably an earlier name — the download is Casement.zip and the command is CASEMENT.

How to load it

Unzip Casement.zip and load CASEMENT.LSP with APPLOAD. No support files. Our AutoLISP guide covers loading.

Step-by-step usage

  1. Set the last point where you want the window’s corner — the ID command is the simplest way.
  2. Type CASEMENT.
  3. At “Width:” give the opening width.
  4. At “Height:” give the opening height.
  5. At “Left or Right hinge:” type L or R. The window is drawn.

Draw one at a known size in a scratch drawing and dimension it, so you can see how the fixed frame offsets relate to the width you typed before using it on a real plan.

Compatibility notes

No date or author in the file. It uses basic point arithmetic and AutoCAD’s own OFFSET and drawing commands, which tends to survive; written-for rather than tested-on as always.

Plain AutoLISP with no dialog boxes and no Express Tools calls, so nothing requires the full product; LT users on LT 2024 or later, the release that brought AutoLISP to LT, should be able to run it. See what runs on AutoCAD LT. As a sample program it is also worth reading — the helper that draws a box and returns a point inside it is a neat trick for anything that needs to offset a rectangle afterwards.
